Biography: Larionov
(b Tiraspol, Moldova, June 3, 1881; d Fontenay-aux-Roses nr Paris, May 10, 1964) Russian painter. Larionov was one of the leaders of the Russian Avant-garde, a founder of the abstract movement Rayonism and a leader of the group Jack of Diamonds. Whilst a student at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, Larionov attended Konstantin Korovin's classes. Korovin, the main exponent of Russian Impressionism, played a major role in Larionov's artistic development. In 1904 a new period in Larionov's work began, marking a transition from the Impressionists’ picturesque techniques to the more innovative styles of Post-impressionism and Cezannism.* Larionov, along with Natalia Goncharova, was responsible for the creation of Rayonism, the goal of which was to redefine the relationship between the painting and the object represented: the painting itself was now its own object with its own value, no longer a tool with which to depict outside reality. Reflected rays of light from the subject intersect with each other creating abstract spatial forms which become an immaterial, spatial construction of their own.** (Credit: *Christie’s, London, Russian Art, June 11, 2008, lot 74; **Sotheby’s, London, Russian Art Evening, November 26, 2007, lot 44)
