William Kurelek Biography
(b Whitford, Alta, 3 March 1927; d Toronto, Nov 1977). Canadian painter and writer of Ukrainian descent. He gained an arts degree from the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, in 1949. He was then at the Ontario College of Art, Toronto, from 1949 to 1950 and at the Instituto Allende in San Miguel, Mexico, from 1950 to 1951. After a period of restless travelling he went to England in 1952 where, after a breakdown and suicide attempt, he converted to Roman Catholicism in 1957. While in England he began to paint in earnest and had paintings in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions from 1956 to 1958. Even before his conversion his work was imbued with religious feeling, as in Lord That I May See (1955; Montreal, Mus. F.A.), and religion is central to all his later work.
