Louis Justin Laurent Icart Biography

Louis Icart was born in Toulouse to Jean and Elisabeth Icart. There he was enrolled in the l’Ecole Superieure de Commerce de Toulouse to pursue a career in business and banking (his father’s field). But his discovery of the writings and plays of Victor Hugo diverted his interests towards the theater and a taste for the arts. In 1907, when he moved to Paris, Icart began to concentrate on painting, drawing, and etching . He is best known today for his masterful etchings that capture the free spirit of life in Paris during the opening decades of the twentieth century. Paris of the 1920s was exactly suited to the talents of Icart who became a symbol of the Art Deco era. By the late 20s he was working for major fashion and design studios and had become very successful both financially and artistically. While his style reflected the spirit of the Deco period, it owed much to his studies of eighteenth century artists such as Jean Antoine Watteau, Jean Honoré Fragonard and François Boucher. He also drew inspiration from the Impressionists Monet and Degas as well as the Symbolist Odilon Redon and Gustave Moreau. In 1914 Icart met a blonde eighteen-year old girl named Fanny Volmers who, at the time was an employee of the fashion house, Paquin. She eventually became his wife and an inspiration for his art throughout his life. Icart’s style was one of refinement and luxury. His etchings depicted women in environments of splendor and opulence. The women of his etchings were often erotic or at least almost always sensuous. They cavorted in luxurious settings with abundance of pillows or in company with lithe dogs. The etched imagery of Icart was laced with humor and a sense of unreal idealism that appealed to as well as expressed the era of the 20s and 30s. Despite their period appearance, the etchings of Icart continue to hold strong commercial appeal today.
