Frederick Yeates Hurlstone Biography
(b London, 1800; d London, 10 June 1869). English painter. After training under William Beechey, Thomas Lawrence and Benjamin Robert Haydon, he entered the Royal Academy Schools in London in 1820. In 1823 his large, ambitious composition, the Contention between the Archangel Michael and Satan for the Body of Moses , won a gold medal. Thereafter he exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and the British Institution, until his election to the Society of British Artists in 1831, after which he rarely showed work elsewhere. In 1835 he was elected President of the Society and continued in office until his death. A successful portrait painter, he preferred to devote his energies to history paintings in the anecdotal or literary vein, and such works as the Enchantress Armida (1831) from Torquato Tasso were greatly admired. He visited Italy in 1835, Spain in 1841, 1851 and 1852 and Morocco in 1854. His historical paintings based on these travels earned him the title of the British Murillo; his broad reading in foreign literature, added to first-hand observation, gave vividness and authenticity to such paintings as the Last Sigh of the Moor , which won a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1855. Later he turned to sentimental Spanish and Italian rustic or fancy subjects, as in a Fishermans Daughter of Mola di Gaeta (1858); his technique coarsened, and his reputation declined.
