Evie Hone Biography

(b Roebuck Grove, Co. Dublin, 22 April 1894; d Rathfarnham, Co. Dublin, 13 March 1955). Painter and stained-glass artist, descendant of Joseph Hone, a brother of (1) Nathaniel Hone (i). In 1905 she was crippled by infantile paralysis, and after prolonged treatment, she lived at intervals on the Continent. A visit to Assisi in 1911 made a lasting impression on her. She started training at the Byam Shaw School of Art, London, c . 1913, working briefly with Walter Sickert in 1918 and then with Bernard Meninsky (1891–1950); on the latter’s advice she continued her studies in Paris under André Lhôte and was soon joined there by Mainie Jellett. In 1921 they persuaded Albert Gleizes to take them as pupils, working with him intermittently until 1931. During the 1920s Hone also visited Spain.
