Biography: Graves

(b Weymouth, Massachusetts, 1859; d Kennebunkport, Maine, 1936) American painter. Originally considered a member of the Boston School, Abbott Fuller Graves is best known as a painter of Kennebunkport, Maine. Born in Weymouth, Massachusetts, Graves studied painting both in New England and abroad, traveling to Paris in 1884, where he studied flower painting under Georges Jeannin, the foremost practitioner of the genre in Europe. Upon Graves' return to Boston, he became an instructor at the Cowles Art School, working closely with friend and celebrated young American Impressionist, Childe Hassam. Like Hassam, Graves was deeply attached to the New England landscape, particularly its historic architecture and lovely old flower gardens. Graves first visited Kennebunkport in 1891, and soon afterwards settled there permanently with his wife and family. He quickly became very involved with the town's community, organizing a local art school, and devoting much of his time to painting the town's landscape and people.
