Francisco Goya Biography
(b Fuendetodos, Spain 1746; d Bordeaux, France 1828) Spanish painter. The Spanish court painter Francisco Jose de Goya y Lucientes is particularly distinguished for his paintings depicting the violent themes of warfare and human struggle. Goya is also credited as one of the first artists to make the transition from realism to modernism. Goya began studying painting at age fourteen. In 1780 he joined the Royal Academy of San Fernando. By the late 1780s, Goya was the personal painter to King Charles IV. From 1795 to 1797 Goya was the Director of Art at the Royal Academy. After becoming permanently deaf due to an illness in 1792, Goya’s work was increasingly fantastical and mythological due to the lack of court commissions. From 1808 to 1814 Goya was the court painter to the French during their invasion of Spain. The French occupation of Goya’s native Spain was a recurring subject of his work. In 1824 Goya left Spain for France as a result of King Fernando VII’s re-instigation of the Spanish Inquisition, and lived there until his death.
