Alfred Elmore Biography
(b Clonakilty, Co. Cork, 1815; d London, 24 Jan 1881). English painter of Irish birth. The son of a doctor, Elmore moved to London and attended the Royal Academy Schools from 1832. He also studied at a French atelier and travelled to Munich and Italy, spending two years in Rome and returning to England in 1844. He began exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1834 and continued to exhibit there between his travels. His large historical subjects such as Rienzi in the Forum (exh. RA 1844; sold London, Sothebys, 16 March 1988) led to his election as ARA in 1845 and RA in 1857. The historical settings of his paintings ranged from 14th-century Florence to absolutist France, and his subject-matter was often unusual (e.g. Invention of the Combing Machine , exh. RA 1862; Nottingham, Castle Mus.). He also painted literary subjects, especially from Shakespeare. Elmores brief experimentation with modern life subject-matter resulted in On the Brink (exh. RA 1865; Cambridge, Fitzwilliam), which depicts a woman in distress outside the notorious gaming salon at Homburg. Although ambiguous in implication, Elmores painting seems to suggest the potential fall of a woman through seduction, following the tradition of Holman Hunts Awakening Conscience (1853; London, Tate) and Augustus Eggs Past and Present (1858; London, Tate).
