Biography
(b Strasbourg, France, 1832; d Paris, France, 1883) French Painter. At the age of 15, in Paris, France, Gustave Doré was hired as an illustrator by Charles Philipon. By the age of 16, he had become the highest paid illustrator in France. His commissions included illustrating the work of Rabelais, Balzac, Dante, Poe, and Byron.
