Elaine DeKooning Biography

(b Brooklyn, PA, 12 March 1918; d Southampton, NY, 1 Feb 1989). Painter, sculptor, draughtsman, printmaker and writer, wife of (1) Willem de Kooning. She studied at the Leonardo da Vinci Art School under Conrad Marca-Relli, where she met de Kooning, Arshile Gorky and Milton Resnick (b 1917), and at the American Artists School, where her teachers included Benjamin Wilson. In her early work de Kooning concentrated primarily on formal, pictorial problems, such as the placement of objects in an environment and the spatial relationships between them, for example Still-life (with Scissors) (oil on masonite, c. 1939; artist’s estate). She was always interested in both figurative and abstract art, and from the 1940s her work included portraits and gestural abstraction. She acknowledged the influence of her husband and of the Abstract Expressionists of the New York School, with whom she associated.
