studied

the
Collège
Bourbon,
where
he
met
the
poet
Théodore
de
Banville.
In
1839
he
entered
the
atelier
of
Léon
Cogniet,
and
he
made
his
Salon
début
in
1844
with
two
figure
paintings
and
a
biblical
subject,
St
Cecilia
in
Adoration
(untraced).
Wounded
in
the
arm
during
the
Revolution
in
1848,
he
left
Paris
in
June
1849
to
convalesce
at
Barèges
