Biography

(b Württemberg, 1853; d Brooklyn, NY, 1 April 1924). American painter of German birth. He moved with his family to the USA in 1867 and lived most of his life in Brooklyn, NY. While earning his living as a sign-painter, he studied for three years in the evening classes of the National Academy of Design in New York and is first recorded as a portrait and landscape painter in exhibitions in the late 1870s in ... While earning his living as a sign-painter, he studied for three years in the evening classes of the National Academy of Design in New York and is first recorded as a portrait and landscape painter in exhibitions in the late 1870s in Brooklyn and New York. In 1879 he returned to Germany, where he studied for a year at the Akademie in Munich with the history painter Wilhelm von Lindenschmidt (1829–95). After his return to the USA, he exhibited regularly throughout the 1880s at the National Academy of Design, the Brooklyn Art Association and the Society of American Artists.  (hide)
