Jan Jansz. de Heem Biography
(bapt Antwerp, 2 July 1650; d after 1695). Son of (1) Jan Davidsz. de Heem. He also taught by his father and was in Utrecht with his fathers family from 1667 until 1672. Little is known about Jan Jansz. de Heem, but it is now thought that a considerable portion of the paintings signed J. de Heem , which were previously attributed to Jan Davidsz. de Heem, are works by his son Jan Jansz. (e.g. New York, Met.; London, Wallace, see fig.; The Hague, Mauritshuis). The dimensions are sometimes larger than those of his father, and the brushstroke and detailing are usually simpler, with less elaborate glazing.
