is
known
primarily
for
his
large
decorative
schemes
depicting
figures
in
landscape.
Although
he
is
generally
regarded

precursor
of
SYMBOLISM,

any
contemporary
movement,
and
his
works
appealed
to
academic
and
avant-garde
artists
alike.
