Pedro Coronel Biography
(b Zacatecas, 25 March 1923; d Mexico City, 23 May 1985). Painter and sculptor. After studying at the Escuela de Pintura y Escultura La Esmeralda in Mexico City, he lived from 1946 to 1952 in Europe, where he came into contact with Marcel Breuer and Constantin Brancusi. He returned to Mexico, where his first exhibition in 1954 was favourably received, but continued to travel and exhibit his work internationally. His chromatically rich paintings, while appearing abstract, include recurrent cosmic motifs, recognizable human figures, flora, fauna and symbols of life and death. In form and colour his work is distantly related to that of Rufino Tamayo. Occasionally, the colour becomes brighter and the texture loses its harsh violence, but the shining suns are recurrent central motifs. He received two prizes at exhibitions held at the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes in Mexico City: first prize at the Salón Nacional de Pintura in 1959 and the Premio José Clemente Orozco at the second Bienal Interamericana de Pintura y Grabado in 1960. He also assembled an important collection of African art and Japanese prints, housed in the former Jesuit monastery of S Luis Gonzaga in Zacatecas.
