Camille Claudel Biography
(b Fère-en-Tardenois, Aisne, 8 Dec 1864; d Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, Gard, 19 Oct 1943). Sculptor, painter and draughtswoman. Her nascent interest in sculpture was fostered at Nogent-sur-Seine by a local sculptor, later highly successful, Alfred Boucher. She came to share with Boucher a taste for symbolic figure groups with philosophical messages. Her earliest extant works were executed after 1881, when Mme Claudel and her children moved to Paris, and Camille started to attend the Académie Colarossi. These were portrait heads and busts of the family and friends, such as Paul Claudel Aged 13 (bronze, 1881; Châteauroux, Mus. Bertrand).
