Dale Patrick Chihuly Biography

Dale Chihuly was an early graduate student in Harvey K. Littleton’s glass program at the University of Wisconsin, where he earned an M.F.A. degree. Chihuly then went on to the Rhode Island School of Design where he helped establish a glass program in 1968. On a Fulbright grant he became the most prominent artist American to work in an Italian glass establishment, where he produced glass art in the Venini Glass Factory at Murano, Venice. Chihuly is the most internationally acclaimed American glass artist working today. In 1996, during the Venezia Aperto Vetro, the first Biennale of Glass, he and his international associates produced fourteen spectacular installation that included large scale chandeliers of glass that were hung over the canals, in alleyways and at the Ducal palace in Venice. Chihuly was the co-founder and is current artistic director of the Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, Washington, where he attracts more than 250 students annually to work with the best glass artisans in the country. He works in a collaborative way with a large team of artisans to produce monumental works that are displayed in major museums plus generating exciting exhibitions in the U.S. as well as many abroad. His approach to glass draws on the expressive use of the fluid medium of glass that offers an impressive marriage of both color with form with commanding monumentality. Always innovative, Chihuly has produced a diverse variety or series of glass art ranging from Sea Forms, Persians, Macchia, blanket cylinders (inspired by Navajo blankets), chandeliers and monumental richly colored spheres that were initially inspired by Japanese glass floats for nets that are sometimes found washed up on the shores of the Pacific coast. Dale is the most famous ambassador throughout the world for the fairly recent studio glass movement that began in the U.S. in the 1960s.
