Nicolas-Toussaint Charlet Biography
(b Paris, 20 Dec 1792; d Paris, 30 Dec 1845). French lithographer, painter and draughtsman. After working as a minor civil servant in Paris, he joined the army and in 1814 distinguished himself in the defence of Clichy. As a Bonapartist, he lost his commission upon the restoration of the monarchy and so devoted himself to painting and drawing. He first studied under Charles Jacques Lebel (fl 180127), a pupil of David, and then entered the studio of Antoine-Jean Gros in 1817. During this apprenticeship he had a number of lithographs published and in 1820 La Vieille Armée française a collection of his drawings showing infantry uniformsappeared. In 1822 the firm of Gihaut issued Recueil de croquis à lusage des petits enfants , the first of several albums of Charlets lithographs to be published. At the same time he worked on a number of drawings for Antoine-Vincent Arnaults La Vie politique et militaire de Napoléon (Paris, 1826). After the revolution of 1830 Charlet was made a captain in the National Guard and held various military positions until 1840. Though best known for his lithographs, he also produced a number of paintings which are, however, of a lesser quality than his graphic work (e.g. Episode from the Russian Campaign , 1836; Lyon, Mus. B.-A.). In whatever medium he worked, his subject was usually military exploits under the First Empire, which made his work popular with the opposition under the Restoration and influential in the propagation of a mythic view of the Napoleonic era. He was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1836 and in 1839 was appointed professor at the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris. Numerous examples of his work are held in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris.
