Biography: Cartier-Bresson

(b Chanteloup, Seine-et-Marne, 22 Aug 1908). French photographer, painter and draughtsman. He not only shaped and extended the concept of photography but through it achieved a psychological penetration and formal perfection equal to other kinds of serious image-making. He began to study painting and drawing at the age of 15 and in Paris was a student in the atelier of André Lhote in 1927–8, a painter whom he remembered with affection and respect. Lhote’s Synthetic Cubist methods and high valuation of the ‘lightning sketch’ as a source of ideas seem to have proved fruitful for him.
