Antonio Carneo (1637-1692)

Aliases: Antonio Carniello; Antonio Carnio

Professions: Painter

  • ANTONIO CARNEO CONCORDIA 1637-1692 PORTOGRUARO

  • Old Master Painting: Antonio Carneo

Biography: Carneo

(b Concordia Sagittaria, nr Venice, 26 Nov 1637; d Portogruaro, 16 Dec 1692). Italian painter. He was a highly original artist, whose eclectic style is dazzlingly varied, and who brought new vigour to painting in the Veneto. His life and career are sparsely documented. His father, Giacomo Carneo, was an artisan and bell-ringer, and it is not clear how Antonio acquired his knowledge of painting, which was rooted in the art of the Venetian Mannerists such as Pordenone, Tintoretto, Veronese and Palma Giovane, yet extended to the painterly Baroque style of Rubens, Johann Liss, Bernardo Strozzi, Francesco Maffei, Bernhardt Keil, Sebastiano Mazzoni, Giovanni Battista Langetti and Luca Giordano. A period of about ten years in Cordovado, beginning in or before 1658, is documented. It has been suggested (Pallucchini) that sometime in the 1660s he worked in Pietro della Vecchia’s studio.
