Biography: Capogrossi

(b Rome, 7 March 1900; d Rome, 9 Oct 1972). Italian painter. After taking a degree in law in 1922 he decided to become a painter and attended the atelier of Felice Carena, at the same time forming a very close friendship with the Italian painter Emanuele Cavalli (1904–81), an almost symbiotic association that lasted until about 1945. He first exhibited his work in 1927 alongside Cavalli; their combination of primitivism with an intellectual approach influenced the formative work of Gino Bonichi Scipione, Mario Mafai and Antonietta Raphaël (?1895–1975).
