(b Chatham, Massachusetts, 1910; d 1982) American painter. Arriving in Cape Cod in the late 17th century, Cahoon’s ancestors were the first Dutch settlers in Cape Cod. He grew up in the harbor and enjoyed sketching, sailing, fishing and digging along the shore. Cahoon received his education at the School of Practical Art in Boston, Massachusetts. He grew up in the harbor and enjoyed sketching, sailing, fishing and digging along the shore. Cahoon received his education at the School of Practical Art in Boston, Massachusetts. After learning the decorative painting technique of rosemaling, a Swedish folk tradition that consists of painting a combination of flowers and scrolls, Cahoon opened his own decorative painting business. He owned multiple decorative painting businesses for approximately 15 years before shifting to easel painting. The subject matter of Cahoon’s easel paintings focuses on humorous nautical scenes frequently depicting sailors and mermaids.  (hide)
