After
attending
the
Académie
des
Beaux-Arts
in
Mons
he
met
the
poet
Achille
Chavée
at
La
Louvière
in
1939
and
joined
the
Surrealist
group
Rupture.
His
first
paintings
were
influenced
by
Magritte
and
Yves
Tanguy.
In
1947
he
joined
the
Jeune
Peinture
Belge
group
in
Brussels
and
met
Christian
Dotremont
and
Pierre
Alechinsky;
he
was
also
close
to
the
Cobra
group
until
1951.
