Jorg Breu Biography
(b augsburg, c. 147580; d augsburg, mayoct 1537). of the trio of great augsburg painters active c. 1500, breu, compared with hans holbein the elder and hans burgkmair i, was the most versatile: as well as altarpieces he produced history paintings, portraits and frescoes and made designs for wood-engravers and glass painters. he was also, perhaps because of his humble origins as the son of the weaver georg breu, the most traditional of the threean evaluation shared by his contemporaries. his background is vividly described in his chronik des augsburger malers jörg breu d. Ä., 151237 (die chroniken der deutschen städte , xxix, ed. f. roth, leipzig, 1906), a commentary on day-to-day events in which he expressed support for the reformation and the poor in vehement and sometimes radical terms.
