George Brecht Biography
(b New York, 7 March 1926). American sculptor, performance artist and writer. He studied at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science from 1946 to 1950 and in 19589 attended the class in Experimental Composition given by John Cage at the New School for Social Research in New York. Like fellow students soon associated with the PERFORMANCE ART events known as Happenings and with the emergence of the FLUXUS movement, Brecht was influenced by Cages dissolution of boundaries between art, poetry, music, literature and theatre and by the role of chance and play in the creative act. After composing music with built-in chance durations or creating scores from game elements such as playing cards, he found music on its own too limiting and conceived of the event as the determining structure for his work. He called his first one-man exhibition (New York, Reuben Gal., 1959) Towards Events as an indication of the total, multi-sensory experience he now sought to create, sometimes simply in the form of written instructions.
