Bram Bogart Biography
(b Delft, 12 July 1921). Belgian painter of Dutch birth. He trained to be a decorator, which gave him his knowledge of painting techniques. His first works as a painter date from 194650, when he spent considerable time in southern France and Paris. Attracted by the French landscape, with its weather-beaten walls, he started to produce virtually monochrome abstract paintings allied to matter painting from the early 1950s. He was the first Dutch artist to work in this manner. Between 1951 and 1960 Bogart lived and worked in Paris. He exhibited regularly in the Netherlands, for example with the Nederlandse Informele Groep (formed in 1957), and he was the only artist among them to remain faithful to its principles. He continued to develop his paintings from the material textures, giving special attention to the calligraphic nature of the brushwork.
