Renato Birolli Biography
(b Verona, 10 Dec 1905; d Milan, 3 May 1959). Italian painter. He moved to Milan in 1929 after being expelled from the Accademia Cignaroli in Verona. He was influenced by the critic Edoardo Persico, who adopted a pan-European style based on a return to French Impressionism. In 1932 Birolli participated in a collective organized by Persico at the Galleria Il Milione, Milan, which prefigured the orientation of the Corrente movement. There he exhibited the key work of his early period, St Zeno the Fisherman (1931; Milan, Gal. A. Mod.), which owed much to the colour of the Milanese Chiaristi group and the manner of Tullio Garbari (18921931).
