His name first appears in a Milanese notarial act of 11 May 1472, as witness to a procura ad causas (‘power of attorney’) stipulated by the painter Melchiorre Lampugnano (d c . 1485–6). His presence in Lampugnano’s home suggests that he was already active as a painter, perhaps professionally associated with the older artist either as an assistant or partner. In 1481 his name appears in the ‘matricola’ of Milanese painters. Nothing is known of Bergognone’s training or activity before the late 1480s. Although it may be assumed, on the basis of stylistic evidence, that he met Vincenzo Foppa during this period, Foppa’s influence is not strongly felt in such early works as the Pietà (probably c . early 1470s; Gazzada, Cagnola priv. col.). In the 1480s Foppa’s example took on primary importance for Ambrogio: the small fresco of the Virgin in a lunette over a door in the south transept of the Certosa di Pavia, one of his first works there, makes direct reference to Foppa’s Madonna del Tappeto (Milan, Brera) executed for S Maria in Brera, Milan, in 1485, while other works of this period reflect Foppa’s compositions and figure types. Much has also been said about the influence of ‘northern’ art on Bergognone, which, if it exists, is of Provençal rather than Netherlandish origin; it is possible that Bergognone, like Foppa, worked in Liguria, on the north-west coast of Italy, before beginning his activity at the Certosa.  (hide)
