Alexander Benois Biography
(b 1870; d 1960) Russian born painter, Benois was also a talented set designer, critic, art historian, writer and memoirist. He was one of the founding members of the World of Art society, a multi-disciplinary artistic movement set up to revive interest in the neoclassical art of Europe and Russia and to revitalize the artistic life of Russia at the turn of the 20th century. As an artist, he was mostly self-taught and worked in watercolor. One of his favorite artistic devices was giving an impression that human figures are merely 'governed' by majestic architecture, landscape, atmosphere and the spirit of the time. His mature style displayed virtuoso graphic technique and he continued to paint and design for theater until his death in Paris in 1960.
