Leon Belly Biography
(b saint-omer, pas-de-calais, 10 march 1827; d paris, 24 march 1877). french painter. he studied briefly with the history painter françois-edouard picot, then trained with the landscape specialist constant troyon. early in his career belly showed a dual interest in orientalist exoticism and naturalistic views of the french landscape. he was influenced by the near eastern scenes of alexandre decamps and prosper marilhat but in 1849 visited barbizon, where he admired the works of théodore rousseau, millet and corot.
