Frank Auerbach (b. 1931)
Biography: Auerbach
(b 1931 Berlin) Forced to flee Nazi Germany as a child, Frank Auerbach immediately felt at home in his adopted city of London. Here he studied at St. Martin’s School of Art followed by the Royal College of Art. He is best known for his scenes of Primrose Hill and Camden Town in London, as well as portraits, often of the same three women. His work is characterized by heavily applied paint, a technique known as impasto, to the point where his canvases appear sculpted rather than painted. His drawings were often done on thick stacks of paper and in some places he would erase through multiple layers, revealing those beneath. His style is broadly labeled expressionist and he took inspiration from Cezanne.
