Ivan Aivazovsky Biography
(b Feodosia, Crimea 1817; d 1900) Born into a poor Armenian family, Aivazovsky’s talent was recognized early in his youth. After being accepted to the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts he developed an interest in landscape painting, concentrating on marine landscapes. He traveled widely, painting all across Europe and his talent earned the respect J.M.W. Turner, the eminent English landscape and marine painter. In the latter half of the 19th century, a trend toward realism is evident in Aivazovsky’s work, though he never completely abandoned his romantic tendencies. He learned how to paint the sea from memory, capturing the movement of the ocean in quick pencil sketches. This ability made Aivazovsky one of the most prolific Russian painters of his era, leaving behind more than 6,000 paintings, though not all were of the high quality he is known for. He became very wealthy through his commissioned work and he used that wealth to open an art school and gallery in his birthplace of Feodosia, Crimea.
