 Lot 5024 Image

Lot 5024: ***TIFFANY & CO. STERLING, EDWARD C. MOORE
This sterling silver epergne by Tiffany & Co., would proved a handsome centerpiece or ornament for the table or sideboard.

 Lot 5068 Image

Lot 5068: ***ROOKWOOD ART POTTERY VASE
Those who collect Rookwood pottery know that not all of was the tobacco brown variety. Rookwood maintained fashion trends as evidenced by this work decorated by Edward Diers and dated, 1931. It stands 9 1/2" high.

 Lot 5155 Image

Lot 5155: ***FRENCH BRONZE ANIMALIER SCULPTURE
While this sculpture was probably not cast within the artist's lifetime, it is a bronze after the great French animal sculptor Barye-- and is mounted on an attractive marble base having fossil inclusions.

 Lot 5158 Image

Lot 5158: ***PAIR OF BRONZE FIGURAL CANDLEHOLDERS
These large figural candleholders are charming examples of the American sculptor named Edward McCartan. If these are too large, consider the pair of small bronze bookends of Lot 5164 signed by the female American sculptor B. Putnam and dated 1914. They are delightful.

 Lot 5394 Image

Lot 5394: ***CALDER, ALEXANDER: GOUACHE, PAINTING,LISTED
There are a large number of Alexander Calder working drawings in this sale that deserve attention. He made colored lithos that look like these drawings, but those offered in this sale are original gouache or opaque water color working drawings. This was for his sculpture of "The Universe" located in the Sears Tower, Chicago. The gouache is signed and dated 1973. Look at all the other works by Calder and make your own choice. Among all, this one is my favorite.

 Lot 20 Image

Lot 20: Lionel train set, o gauge locomotive number 226E along with a Lionel e...
Some adults never forget the joy that they experienced as a child when they were given a model train. Neither do women who, as a child, received pretty dolls. Brilliant marketing plans for the toy industry makes it important to produce for sale endless numbers of parts for sets that never can be completed. Such it is with model train sets (many offered here) and dolls -- with clothing and accessories also abundantly represented in this auction.

 Lot 25 Image

Lot 25: Lionel construction set along with a Lionel chem-lab and box of miscel...
My older brother owned a chemistry set like this one. His lab was restricted to the basement where it was thought that little damage could be done because he worked behind the laundry which hung on lines indoors during winter months. But one day, with a combination of sulphur and other chemicals he produced rotten egg gas that drenched the entire home. What fun this instructive chem-lab was to the inquiring mind of a boy who became a famous medical doctor. Our mother was a saint. She never "discouraged" her eight boys -- but she did have firm limits that were well defined and absolute!

 Lot 83 Image

Lot 83: 1950's toy pedal car/plane, pressed steel with red paint, height 27", ...
I recall how one of my younger brothers scooted around the neighborhood of Ann Arbor, MI. in a pedal plane like this one. In those days of the 40's there was a great design sense for sound and untippable childhood vehicles.

 Lot 94 Image

Lot 94: Steiff camel and deer.
As a young child I was given a Steiff camel like the one offered here. It was my favorite object to carry under my arm. I wore it out. These examples look fresh and undistressed. People tend to select things with which they have associated memories.

 Lot 180 Image

Lot 180: Box lot to include New York City map, two Boston almanacs, two New Yor...
Not all the items of this auction are toys -- unless some of the unusual printed works offered might be considered "adult" toys --such as ledgers and almanacs. I have a fondness for almanacs especially as they reveal much about popular culture-- viewpoints and seasonal predictions. Two are Boston Almanacs.

 Lot 22 Image

Lot 22: Staffordshire Plate Wood & Sons US Indep
I do not know when this transfer printed plate was made in Staffordshire. My surmise is that it could have been made c. 1876 to capture the American market at the time of the Centennial celebrated in Philadelphia. What intrigues me most is the image of the landing of the Pilgrims on a rocky coast greeted by an Indian -- a painting of which was made in the early nineteenth century (now hanging in the U.S. Dept. of State, Diplomatic Reception Rooms).

 Lot 26 Image

Lot 26: 18th C French-Canadian Arm Chair red painted
I like French-Canadian furniture. A few examples in a collection of Americana adds flavor with its variety. 18th century ladder back chairs made in British North America are simpler in form. It would be instructive to have this one beside an example made in what is now the U.S.

 Lot 100 Image

Lot 100: 18th C Chippendale Secretary/Desk mahogany
Here is a classic eighteenth century desk and bookcase made in the Boston area that looks like a superb specimen of eighteenth century cabinetmaking. This purchase will be an important investment --so if you are not familiar with "the ropes" take someone along who can help vet the piece and assist with advice. From the entry and the image, the work appears sound.

 Lot 187 Image

Lot 187: Carved Cooper s Hawk Richard Koeditz c1990
Many beautifully carved and painted birds made (c. 1990) by Richard Koeditz are offered in this auction. Of these, my favorite is this Coopers Hawk.

 Lot 273 Image

Lot 273: 4-Pcs Black Basalt 18th-19th C Wedgwood JP
If you like black basalt as I do, this lot will be attractive. Some pieces are marked "Wedgwood". The double handled sugar bowl has a few chips inside of the rim, otherwise it is fine. Note that not all works are from the firm of Wedgwood.

 Lot 693 Image

Lot 693: 3-Pc Glass c1830 Pittsburgh vase master salts
In recent years Pittsburgh glass has received the attention of collectors that it rightly deserves. The vase is catalogued as Pittsburgh, c. 1830. The master salts are believed to have been possibly made in Pittsburgh.

This charming collection of eigheenth century ballooning prints celebrate a famous flight of 19 October 1783. These prints will offer the owner much delight and research opportunities about the occasion.

 Lot 783 Image

Lot 783: Native Amer Pottery Zuni Bowl Agnes Peynestra
The patterns depicted on this handsome 7 3/4" diameter bowl that stands 6" tall are classic Zuni motifs. I do not recall meeting the maker Agnes Peynestra when I surveyed Zuni potters and their wares in the 1980s. The bowl is beautifully finished and seems in excellent condition.

Catalog:
 Lot 833 Image

Lot 833: Roman Glass Jar ribbd hndls 200-400 AD
Ancient Roman glass and ceramics abounds in this auction. Here is a handsome specimen that appeals to me. Be sure to look through all the offerings to select those that appeal to you.

Catalog:
 Lot 879 Image

Lot 879: Terra Cotta 3-Hndl Jar Iron Age 586 BC
This Iron Age terra cotta jar is magnificently shaped-- its purity of form is astonishing. There are so many outstanding works from ancient, African and tribal cultures offered in this auction that I dispair of showing only a few selections.

 Lot 4 Image

Lot 4: (AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION)
It seems to me that a historian of the legal profession will want to own this important and vital manuscript record and register of the original founders of the American Bar Association.

 Lot 13 Image

Lot 13: (AMERICANA) ISAIAH THOMAS ALMANACK
How wonderful it would be to own this almanac printed by Isaiah Thomas who was responsible for founding the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester. I may be mistaken, but as I recall, his printing equipment is on display in the reconstructed early print shop at Old Sturbridge Village.

 Lot 35 Image

Lot 35: *(ARCHITECTURE, BRITAIN)
MacQuoid and Edwards is the classic pictorial text that anyone who wishes to understand English furniture must own. This lot includes those three volumes of 1923 as well as 4 vols. pertaining to British architecture and furnishings-- vol 2 only of which illustrated by Robert William Billings.

 Lot 141 Image

Lot 141: DOYLE, A. CONAN
Here is a classic first edition for those who love A. Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles, London: 1902.

 Lot 143 Image
